NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men’s swimming team got its season off to a great start with a dominant 140–101 win over MIT. The first-years for the Bulldogs were vital to the winning effort.

The tremendous 200-yard relay team consisting of senior Max Bottene, junior Tim Dorje Wu, first-year Greg Kalin, and senior Henry Gaissert took home first place. With a huge collegiate debut, first-year Jami Rzepecki finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle.

The 200-yard freestyle was where the Yale squad really shined, with three swimmers placing in the top three. The winner of the event was sophomore Felix Van Cauwelaert with a blistering time of 1:42.78.

The 100-yard freestyle saw Yale take both first and second place. Sophomore Philippe Marcoux took first with a time of 45.63, while first year Connor Lee snatched second with a result of 45.76.

Yale had a strong showing in the 100-yard backstroke, with sophomore Liam Bogart finishing first with a time of 50.11. Similarly, the Elis controlled the 500-yard freestyle. Senior Chris Miller won the event with a time of 4:40.68 and first-year Nathaniel Hickman-Chow was close behind in second with a 4:44.26 finish.

The Bulldogs bested MIT in the 1-meter dive event, as first-year JP Ditto won with a score of 332.55. Senior Chris LaBella was second with a final result of 271.65.

The Elis face Brown tomorrow at home at 1:15 p.m. in the Kiphuth Exhibition Pool.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women’s swimming and diving team kicked off the 2019-20 season on Friday with a home opener against MIT. The team began its quest for a fourth consecutive undefeated season, beating MIT by a score of 168-74.

Yale took first place in both of the relays and six of the individual races, including four freestyle events. Junior Claire O’Mara took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.34. Senior Kendall Brent won the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.17), and sophomore Ashley Loomis won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:22.83). First-year Ophelia Pilkinton won the first event of her collegiate career, finishing first in the 100-yard freestyle (51.18).

A pair of sophomores took first in non-freestyle events. Raime Jones won the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.01), and Izzi Henig paced all swimmers in the 100-yard butterfly (55.66).

Yale also won both diving events. Junior Nikki Watters compiled the highest score in the 1-meter diving (244.88), and first-year Samantha Ho won the 3-meter diving event (264.83).

Yale will look to continue success tomorrow. The Bulldogs host Brown in the Ivy League opener.

THE BASICS:

– The Lead: The No. 7 ranked MIT men’s swimming and diving team saw Bouke Edskes (Rockville, Md.) and Sam Ubellacker (Georgetown, Ky.) win individual events in their season-opening dual meet at Division I Yale University this evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

– Edskes was the only Engineer to win multiple events as he posted the sixth fastest time in Division III this season in the 200-IM in 1:53.98 and the seventh fastest time in Division III this season in the 100-fly in 50.10. Edskes also teamed up with James Richardson (Mercer Island, Wash.)Emilio Sison (Annandale, Va.) and Ubellacker for a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay in 1:33.16, the seventh fastest time in Division III this year.

– Ubellacker and Kyri Chen (Naperville, Ill.) finished 1-2 in the 50-free as Ubellacker posted the top-time in Division III this year in 20.65 and Chen posted the seventh fastest time in Division III this year in 20.96.

– Chen went on to win the 200-free relay alongside Justin Liu (Linwood, N.J.)Nicholas Baginski (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) and Ubellacker in 1:23.46, the third fastest time in Division III this year.

– First-year Samuel Song (Johns Creek, Ga.) was the other winner for MIT in the season opener as he touched the wall first in the 100-breast in 58.48. Other highlights for the Engineers in the pool included a second-place finish by Richardson in the 100-back in 51.39 and a runner-up finish by first-year Trevor Carter (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) in the 1000-free in 9:46.17.

– In the diving well, sophomore Jay Lang (South Lyon, Mich.) registered an NCAA Division III Northeast-North Diving Regional qualifying score on the 3-meter with 293.93 points. He also tallied 258.98 points for third place on the 1-meter board.

– MIT travels to Springfield, Mass. for a double dual meet tomorrow afternoon with New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield College and out of region competitor Trinity (Texas) at 1:00 pm.

– The Lead: First-year Edenna Chen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) shined for the No. 9 ranked MIT women’s swimming and diving team in the season opener at Division I Yale University on Friday evening as the first-year broke the school record and notched the fastest time in Division III this season in the 100-breast.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

– Chen was one of two individual student-athletes to win a swimming event this evening in New Haven. Chen clocked a school record time and NCAA “B” cut time of 1:02.28 in the 100-breast, while sophomore Laura Rosado (New Haven, Conn.) claimed first place in the 100-back in 58.42-seconds.

– The two relay squads also found success in the pool tonight. The 200-medley relay team of Rosado, Chen, Olivia McGrath (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Shannon Hagmaier (Longwood, Fla.) finished as the runner-up with the fourth fastest time in Division III this season at 1:46.12, while the 200-free relay team comprised of Lindsey Bjornstad (Mequon, Wis.)Delaney Burns (Scituate, Mass.), McGrath and Lilia Staszel (Brighton, Mich.) came in second with the fifth fastest time in Division III this season at 1:38.21.

– First-year Callie Kunz (Woodbury, Minn.) posted a pair of second place finishes in her collegiate debut as she notched times of 10:54.47 and 5:19.21 in the 1000-free and 500-free, respectively.

– Junior Hannah Mahaffey (Lawrenceville, Ga.) registered a pair of third place finishes as she touched the wall in 1:57.46 in the 200-free and 58.53 in the 100-fly. Hagmaier claimed third in the 50-free (24.83) and fourth in the 100-free (53.79), while sophomore  Chelsea Zhang (Sherborn, Mass.) finished third in the 200-IM (2:11.11) to round out the swimming highlights for the Engineers in their season-opening meet.

– Deborah Wen (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Blake Zhou (Palo Alto, Calif.) posted the best scores for the Engineers in the diving well tonight. Wen registered 222.00 points for fourth on the 1-meter board, while Zhou tallied 245.93 points for third on the 3-meter board.
