Yale Women Break Seven Pool Records In Road Victory At UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – It was a strong start to the season for the Yale swimming and diving team. The Bulldogs broke seven pool records on their way to a 163-126 victory over UMass at Joseph Rogers Pool.

The pool records came from the 200 medley relay (1:42.85), Caroline Riggs (16:54.67 – 1650 free, 4:55.33 -500 free), Jessey Li (23.20 – 50 free), Vivian Weng (55.82 – 100 fly). Ava Franks (2:023.36 – 200 IM) and the 200 free relay (1:22.55).

Yale also got victories from Hayden Henderson in the 1- and 3-meter diving, Franks in the 100 breaststroke, Lilly Derivaux in the 200 butterfly and Li in the 200 breaststroke.

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women’s swimming and diving team fell to Yale University, 163-126, on Saturday at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool.

The men’s team held an exhibition against Yale that was not scored. Although, the Minutemen’s meet did not count towards their record, they still totaled 16 top-three marks with 15 coming in individual events. In the 3-meter dive, sophomore Andrew Bell registered the lone gold for the men with a score of 360.45.

Women’s Swimming & Diving

The Minutewomen tallied 21 top-three finishes, with 18 coming in individual events, while placing first in one individual event.

Freshman Beren Cakiroglu swam a time of 1:54.72 in the 200 freestyle to claim second place, before seniors Megan Mitchell (57.46) and Bri Williams (57.76) took second and third, respectively, in the 100 backstroke.

In the 100 breaststroke, freshman Lindsay Burbage finished with a time of 1:05.01 to earn the silver, while senior Maggie Desmond swam a season-best 24.03 in the 50 freestyle for third. Senior Caroline Mahoney claimed second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.60.

Mitchell recorded the lone gold in an individual event, swimming a season-best time of 2:03.36 in the 200 backstroke. In the 200 breaststroke, Burbage swam into second place with a time of 2:26.33, while graduate student Summer Pierce followed behind in third with a time of 2:28.52.

The Minutewomen swept the podium in the 500 freestyle, with freshman Sophie Porter leading the way with a time of 5:18.07. Sophomore Lexi Alexen finished second with a time of 5:28.02 and freshman Ursula Koch earned third with a time of 5:32.17.

The women’s team swept the podium in two more events on the day, with senior Ashley Calderon leading the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.61 and Cakiroglu claiming the gold in the 200 individual medley with a season-best time of 2:09.23. Mitchell (59.24) and junior Hannah McIver (1:03.34) took second and third place, respectively, in 100 butterfly, as junior Lauren Long (2:19.47) and Alexen (2:20.79) grabbed second and third in the 200 individual medley, respectively.

In the relays, the team of Williams, Burbage, Pierce and Mahoney combined for a time of 1:45.84 in the 200 medley relay to finish second. Pierce, Calderon, Mahoney and Desmond teamed up for the 200 freestyle relay, placing first in the event with a time of 1:37.43, while the squad of Williams, junior Anna Kwon, freshman Olga Stoura and freshman Diya Ackerman-Vallala placed second, swimming a combined time of 1:39.61.

Mitchell garnered a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:04.12), followed by Williams in second (2:06.20) and junior Lauren Stott in third (2:08.38). Eastham swam the third fastest time in the event for the men’s team with a time of 1:56.67.

Mahoney and Cakiroglu recorded first and second place finishes in the 100 freestyle, swimming times of 52.51 and 53.01, respectively. Quigg took second in the 100 freestyle with time of 46.32. In the 200 breastroke, Burbage claimed the silver with a season-best time of 2:26.11, while Ackerman-Vallala finished third with her own time of 2:27.04.

Another podium sweep for the Minutewomen saw Pierce lead the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.81, followed close behind by junior Anna Kwon in second (2:06.74) and Calderon in third (2:07.12). Freshman Aydin Erkan posted a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:55.40, marking a season-best for the rookie.

In the relay events, the women’s team took first and second place in the 400 medley relay. The team consisting of Mitchell, Burbage, Pierce and Cakiroglu combined for a time of 3:52.21, with the team membered by Williams, Desmond, Calderon and Mahoney recorded a time of 3:52.33. The men’s 400 medley relay team took second as junior Beau Bengston, senior Jack Artis, Montori and Quigg finished with a time of 3:28.45.

On The Boards
Sophomore Salem Howes placed third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 237.98, while taking fourth in the 3-metter dive with a score of 231.45. Fellow sophomore Shreeya Sinha finished the 1-meter dive with a score of 169.43 and the 3-meter dive with a score of 174.53 to take sixth in both events.
