Just hours before beginning her quest for a second World Championships gold in the women’s 200 meter IM, China’s Ye Shiwen has been hampered by an ankle injury, according to Xinhua.
“I twisted my right foot ankle a year ago, and I did not know there is a broken bone inside until recently,” Ye told the Chinese news agency. “It has been affecting my training, so I was planning to pull out of the competition in Kazan, but I still decided to come. I will try my best.”
That means that the 19-year old was almost another among the huge number of medal contenders and favorites to have pulled out of the meet, and while she’ll swim, it appears as though she’s prepared to not necessarily be at her best.
Ye is the defending Olympic Champion in the 200 IM and 400 IM, and this reveal strengthens the chances among others including Hungarian Katinka Hosszu, who is the defending World Champion in both races.
Ye is scheduled just in the IM races; the preliminary rounds of the 200 begin on Sunday morning as the 3rd event of the meet, while the 400 IM (where she holds the World Record) comes on the final day of the meet. Ye’s comments imply that the extra 8 days of rest, though, won’t be of much benefit to her.

I still don’t buy her 58.68 final leg split in the 400IM final at the Olympics as a 16yo, but then only able to go 1:57.37 split in the 4×200 free relay at the same contest.
