Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen picked up a 2nd gold medal of the 2019 Chinese National Championships on Tuesday, while Zhu Menghui approached her time from the World Championships in the women’s 100 free final.
For Ye, she swam a 2:25.79 in the 200 meter breaststroke. She finished 4th in the event at Worlds in 2:23.15. This is a race that she’s developed more lately in her career while simultaneously reviving her abilities in the IMs (where she won silver medals in both the 200 and 400 meter distances in Gwangju). Earlier in the meet she topped the 400 IM in 4:37.40.
Zhu, meanwhile, won the women’s 100 free in 54.34. At the World Championships, she was 14th in this event in 54.07, and split just 54.5 in prelims of China’s 400 free relay (that advanced to the final). China has only medaled once at a World Championships in the 400 free relay, when they took gold in 1994; at the moment, Yang Junxuan is the only Chinese woman who has proven consistently capable of going sub-54 in this race (she’s not at the meet); to improve to 4th place in Tokyo, it is going to take at a minimum all four swimmers under 54 seconds, though that would still leave a significant gap to catch the top 3 of Australia, the US, and Canada.
Other winners on day 6 of the meet include Cong Yu in the men’s 200 IM (2:01.64), and Wang Yutian in the men’s 200 back (1:59.14). Li Guangyuan, who finished 21st in the 200 back at Worlds and is China’s #2 in the event, was disqualified on Tuesday in the final.
