Day 2 of the Brown Deer site for the YMCA Festival featured the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 200 free relay, and 400 medley relay. Just as they did on Thursday, Schroeder Y broke a boys Y National Record. In fact, this time around, they broke 2 records. The squad of Ziyad Saleem, Owen Miller, Jack Lustig, and Ben Meulemans teamed up to post a 3:14.06 for a new record in the boys 400 medley. Ziyad Saleem led the relay off in a personal best of 46.95, chipping 0.03 seconds off his previous best. Miller clocked a 54.54 on the breast leg, Lustig was 48.16 on fly, and Meulemans anchored in 44.41.

Schroeder Y also took the boys 200 free relay, with Ben Lorenz, Ben Meulemans, Ziyad Saleem, and Owen Miller combining for a 1:20.86. Lorenz was out in 20.61, marking a new personal best for the 17-year-old. Meulemans split 20.12 on the 2nd leg, and was followed by a sizzling 19.77 split from Saleem. Miller anchored in 20.36, bringing the team home nearly a full second under the previous record time of 1:21.71. The previous record was held by Springfield Y, and was a relay featuring Ryan Held.

DCST (Dekalb) 18-year-old Quinn Cynor backed up his 500 free performance from Thursday, posting a 1:36.53 to win the boys 200 free. The swim comes in just 0.13 seconds off his lifetime best of 1:36.40, which he swam less than a month ago. Schroeder Y’s Leonardo Gandaria came in 2nd in the race, swimming a 1:37.87. The swim marked a big margin of improvement for the 17-year-old, taking well over a second off his previous best of 1:39.26.

In an incredibly close boys 100 fly final Schroeder Y’s Ziyad Saleem and Champaign County Y’s Andrew Lin finished just 0.03 seconds off each other. Saleem took a narrow lead at the halfway mark, splitting 22.75 on the first 50, compared to a 22.89 for Lin. Lin did edge his way up on Saleem down the stretch of the race, splitting 26.02 to Saleem’s 26.13, but ultimately touched just behind Saleem. Saleem’s final time of 48.88 marked a new lifetime best by 0.71 seconds, while Lin’s 48.91 was a personal best by 0.47 seconds.

In a small heat of the boys 400 IM, Schroeder Y’s Jack Lustig, a 17-year-old, touched first in 3:55.53. Lustig’s swim marked a new lifetime best by 3.11 seconds, which is particularly impressive given that Lustig’s previous best was swum on March 4th of this year. Champaign’s Jake Regenwetter had a massive drop for 2nd, touching in 3:59.97. The swim marked his first time under 4:00 in the event, and was a 7.72 second drop from his previous best of 4:07.69.

Champaign Y’s Angela Coe, after winning the girls 200 IM on Thursday, took the girls 100 fly with a 53.00. The swim marked a huge drop for Coe, who entered the meet with a lifetime best of 53.00. Champaign Teammate Reed Broaders took 2nd, swimming a 53.42. That was also an enormous improvement, taking 1.34 seconds off her previous best time of 54.76.

B.R. Ryall Y 17-year-old Kate Morris took the girls 200 free with a 1:48.48, touching as the only swimmer in the field under 1:50. The swim was off Morris’ lifetime best of 1:46.75, which she swam in 2019, but her time Friday was her fastest of the year 2021. 500 free winner Kayleigh Lovell (Springfield Y) came in 2nd, posting a 1:50.00. The swim was a personal best by 2.95 seconds, shredding her previous best of 1:52.95.

Schroeder Y’s Lilly Zippel was dominant in the girls 400 IM, swimming a 4:21.42 to touch first by well over 6 seconds. The swim was a personal best by 5.34 seconds, and her previous best of 4:26.76 was from February of this year.

In addition to the Y National Records in the boys relays, Schroeder Y won the 2 girls relays as well on Friday. Alana Berlin, Sophia Remington, Tori Brostowitz, and Megan Hartlieb teamed up to clock a 3:42.09 in the girls 400 medley relay, touching first by over 6 seconds.

In the girls 200 free relay, Sydney Geboy, Megan Hartlieb, Tori Brostowitz, and Sailor Whowell put together a 1:32.34 to beat Champaign Y by half a second. Sally Ma blasted a new best time leading off the Champaign relay, swimming a 22.82. That marks her first time under 23 seconds, and a 0.20 seconds improvement. Angela Coe was also moving on the anchor leg of Champaign’s relay, splitting 22.52.
