YSSC’s Spencer Ashby Verbally Commits to Lenoir-Rhyne Bears

Spencer Ashby from Duncan, South Carolina verbally committed to swim for Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina next fall. Ashby is a sprint-to-mid-distance specialist, who leans more towards freestyle and breaststroke disciplines as his main strokes. He is a senior at Spartanburg High School, and recently placed third in the 200y IM at the SCHSL 5A State Championships.

“I’m excited to get to call Hickory home for the next 4 years! The coaches were excellent, and the swimmers that I spoke with were all amazing to get to know. I look forward to being a part of a strong culture!”

Ashby swims year-round for Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club. Since the beginning of the 2016-17 short course season alone he has posted best times in the 1000/1650y free, 50/200y back, 50y breast, 100/200y fly, and 100y IM, and he has yet to swim in a championship meet. His best times typically come from YMCA National Championships. Last summer he lowered his times in the 50/100m free, 100m back, 100m breast, and 200m IM at the YMCA Summer Nationals. At the Spring Nationals he took home best times in the 100/200y free, 100y breast, and 200y IM. His top SCY times include:

  • 50 free – 21.91
  • 100 free – 47.29
  • 200 free – 1:46.50
  • 200 IM – 1:57.58
  • 100 breast – 1:01.99

Lenoir-Rhyne competes in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference. The Bears just completed an impressive season, moving from 9th in the standings in 2016 to 7th at the conference championships last weekend. Ashby is a nice pick-up for the LR Bears; he will be able to make an immediate impact, with times that would land on the school’s top-ten lists in all the above-mentioned events.
