Two-time Canadian Olympian Yuri Kisil returned to the pool earlier this month at the Cascade Speed Meet in Calgary, his first competition since relocating from Swimming’s High Performance Centre – Ontario in Toronto.
In his primary events, Kisil clocked 22.03 in the men’s 50 free and 49.25 in the 100 free (short course meters), and also went 25.05 in the 50 fly.
His personal best time in the 50 free stands at 21.37, set in the 2021 ISL season, and in the 100 free, he’s been as fast as 46.63, done the year prior in the ISL semi-finals.
His 50 fly showing was .25 back of his 24.80 PB set in December 2018.
Kisil, 27, returned to Cascade in September to train under his old age group coach Dave Johnson, who he swam under until departing for HPC – Vancouver in 2014. After competing for UBC in U SPORTS (Canadian university system), Kisil turned pro in 2018 and moved to Toronto to train under Ben Titley at the National Performance Centre in Toronto.
Kisil will be one of six male swimmers representing Canada at next month’s Short Course World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. This will be his third SC Worlds appearance, having competed on home soil in Windsor in 2016 and last year in Abu Dhabi. Kisil won a medal in the mixed 200 free relay on both occasions, including a gold medal in 2021.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
- The University of Calgary Swim Club (UCSC) featured prominently at the competition, with several of their up-and-coming swimmers having impressive performances. Among those was 16-year-old Kamryn Cannings, who set new lifetime bests in the women’s 800 free (8:46.37) and the 100 IM (1:03.17).
- Fellow UCSC swimmer Maxine Clark set a new Alberta Provincial Record for 14-year-old girls in the 50 fly, clocking 28.10. Her best time of 28.00 is currently the record for 13-year-old girls. Clark added best times in the 800 free (8:58.13) and 100 back (1:03.61).
- Another Alberta record fell at the hands of Killarney Swim Club’s Alan Piatek, who swam to a time of 27.06 in the 50 fly, setting a new record for 13-year-old boys. The previous record had been on the books for 10 years, established by Stephen Calkins (27.18) in 2012.
- UCSC’s Paul Dardis posted a lifetime best of 23.07 in the men’s 50 free, making him the 12th-fastest 16-year-old in Canadian history.
