IUPUI sophomore Emmaleigh Zietlow wrapped up what was a sensational performance at the House of Champions Invitational Saturday with a third record swim in the 1650 free, while the University of Indianapolis men’s and women’s teams claimed the overall team wins.
Zietlow, who set a new Horizon League Record in the 500 free and a new IUPUI Record in the 200 free over the first two days of the meet, won the women’s 1650 free on Saturday in a time of 16:36.70, lowering the Jags program record of 16:44.99 set by Olivia Treski in 2018.
Zietlow also lowered the House of Champions meet record of 16:38.59, set by Cincinnati’s Rocky Laabs in 2018, and obliterated her previous personal best of 16:55.93 set en route to winning the Horizon League title last season.
OTHER WINNERS – WOMEN
- UIndy’s Kaitlyn McCoy won her second event of the meet in the 200 back, clocking 1:57.86 to come within a second and a half of her best time (1:56.39). McCoy set her PB en route to winning the D2 national title last season.
- Johanna Buys wrapped up an unbeaten meet with a third individual victory in the 100 free, having also factored on four of UIndy’s winning relays. A native of South Africa, Buys finished in a time of 50.16, quicker than she was in last year’s NCAA final and just shy of her PB set at the 2021 nationals (49.82).
- Capping the meet off in the 400 free relay, Buys anchored in 49.65 to help propel UIndy to victory in a time of 3:23.48, with Illinois second in 3:25.22.
- Illinois’ Taira Jurors won the 200 breast in 2:16.49, dipping under her personal best time of 2:17.15 set way back in March of 2018.
- Along with Zietlow, the other victory for the IUPUI women on Saturday came from freshman Gabby Puryear-Lynch, who swam back-to-back personal bests, ultimately clocking 2:03.14 in the final. UIndy’s Andrea Gomez Espinosa (2:03.85) and Milwaukee’s Ricky Thomas (2:03.95) were close behind in second and third.
- Milwaukee’s Julie Rebek won the 3-meter diving event, putting up a score of 277.58 to edge out IUPUI’s Isabella Smith (275.03).

On the men’s side, another meet record fell by the wayside in the 100 free, where UIndy teammates Jeron Thompson and Joao Silva went under the old mark in both the prelims and the final.
In the heats, Thompson (43.82) and Silva (43.89) both went under the previous mark from UIndy’s Guilherme Zavaneli, a 43.94 set in 2017, and then Thompson shattered his prelim record in the final in a time of 43.35, with Silva taking second in 43.73.
Thompson’s time was a new UIndy record and ranks him second nationally in Division II.
The Greyhounds won a total of five men’s events on the final night, including Cedric Buessing leading a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1650 free.
Buessing, who won the 400 IM in school record time on Friday, won the men’s mile in a time of 15:19.42, having set a best of 15:13.86 at the 2022 NCAAs.
UIndy also had wins in the pool from Bartek Swiderski, who moves into #2 nationally in the 200 back (1:45.66), and Serge Agadzhanyan, who now ranks third in D2 in the 200 fly (1:47.75).
OTHER WINNERS – MEN
- IUPUI’s Logan Kelly earned his second victory of the meet in the 200 breast, registering a time of 1:56.48, within a second and a half of his PB from the 2022 Horizon League Championships (1:55.16).
- UIndy added a win in the 3-meter diving event, as Julio Osuna set a new meet record with a score of 382.13, nearly 50 points clear of the next-highest score. Osuna won the 1-meter event earlier in the competition.
- IUPUI closed the meet out with a narrow win over Lewis in the 400 free relay, out-touching them by .03, 2:59.12 to 2:59.15. The Jaguars had a trio of 44-second splits, while Lewis had a quick 43.59 anchor from Nico Jacinto. UIndy’s team initially touched in 2:55.40, but was disqualified. They had three 43-second splits, including a 43.17 anchor from Thompson, prior to the DQ.
